Digital Dependency and Risky Behaviors Add to Crisis for Bangladesh’s Young Workforce

Dhaka, August 12 – The latest nationwide survey on Bangladeshi youth paints a stark picture of a generation grappling with unemployment, digital overuse, and hazardous online activities. Conducted by a partnership of social‑service NGOs ahead of International Youth Day 2026, the report aligns with the UN’s call for “different circumstances, same hopes.”

Findings indicate that while many young people possess talent, the dearth of job openings forces them into prolonged inactivity. In addition, the study flags a growing reliance on smartphones and internet platforms, which has led to an increase in online gambling, casino games, and drug consumption.

Representatives from various welfare societies highlighted that mental pressure is mounting, with youths reporting anxiety, reduced self‑esteem, and uncertainty about future prospects. Even after years of academic and skill development, many remain disillusioned by the lack of stable employment and financial security.

The report also draws attention to a “transit mindset,” where a segment of the youth perceives Bangladesh as a temporary stopover rather than a place to build a lasting career. This outlook fuels a rising trend of emigration as a perceived solution to their challenges.

Stakeholders call for urgent interventions, including expanded vocational training, mental‑health resources, and stricter regulation of digital gambling platforms, to mitigate the multifaceted crisis facing Bangladesh’s young workforce.
