The Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL), developed by CSIR, has become a pivotal tool for international patent offices after India and Australia formalised a sharing agreement at the third India‑Australia summit.

By granting IP Australia the right to consult TKDL, the agreement ensures that patent examiners can identify prior art rooted in centuries‑old Indian medicinal and cultural traditions. The database includes detailed records of traditional remedies and practices, all indexed and translated into five major languages.

The Ministry of Science and Technology highlighted that this collaboration will make patent examination more robust, discouraging wrongful claims on knowledge that is already in the public domain.

With confidentiality clauses in place, the TKDL is now reachable by 18 patent offices worldwide, marking a significant step toward safeguarding traditional knowledge against unwarranted intellectual property claims.
