Diaspora Protest Targets Anti‑India Campaigns, Calls for Legal Action
A protest held in London on 17 October saw members of the Indian diaspora gather outside the Indian High Commission to denounce what they perceive as anti‑India activities abroad. The gathering featured the Indian flag and chants like “Bharat Mata Ki Jai”, “Modi‑Modi” and “Jai Shri Ram”, underscoring solidarity with Prime Minister Modi.
Attendees claimed they were united to shield India’s global image from campaigns that aim to damage the country’s reputation. They criticised opposition groups in India that are demonstrating against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll and demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
A speaker highlighted that legitimate dissent should be expressed through the judiciary, not through demonstrations that may harm the nation's perception overseas. The crowd also lauded the Modi government’s record, noting the opening of 30 crore bank accounts for the poor as evidence of progressive governance.
REACH India, an international network of Indians, subsequently condemned the anti‑India rhetoric, calling on diaspora members to refrain from joining such protests and to focus on political discussions within India.
