Dengue Deaths Mount in Bangladesh; Experts Urge Early Care

Dengue infections in Bangladesh are rising at a pace that is alarming health observers. On Sunday morning, authorities confirmed 2,249 new cases within the previous 24 hours, the largest one-day increase recorded in 2026 to date.

The same day, seven people lost their lives to the disease. With these latest figures, Bangladesh's total dengue caseload this year stands at 1,23,948, and the number of deaths has risen to 384.

The newly reported deaths were distributed across the country. Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Mymensingh Division each accounted for two, while Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), Khulna Division and Rajshahi Division each recorded one.

Women make up 52.8 percent of the total dengue deaths in the country, and men make up 47.2 percent.

A large number of patients have also recovered. So far, about 1,17,400 dengue patients have been discharged from hospitals after treatment.

Last month, Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, the State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock, warned that the dengue situation could become more severe in Dhaka and other districts in the coming months. He called on people to remain vigilant and take the necessary precautions without delay.

"The threat of dengue may increase in the months ahead, so all people need to become aware now," Tuku had stated.

Experts believe that late arrival at hospitals, a lack of appropriate treatment and the greater vulnerability of high-risk patients are key reasons behind the growing death toll. Many patients begin receiving care only after their condition has deteriorated significantly.

H.M. Nazrul Ahsan, an Associate Professor at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka, said the main driver of the recent rise in deaths is a sharp increase in infections nationwide.

Ahsan explained that three major factors contribute to dengue fatalities: virus-related elements, existing health vulnerabilities among patients, and treatment-related complications.

Public health specialist Mushtuk Hussain has urged a stronger three-tier health system, covering primary, secondary and tertiary care, to improve treatment outcomes for dengue patients.
