Delhi Prepares for International Guests with Intensified Sanitation

With the BRICS 2026 summit set to bring a wave of international representatives to the capital, the New Delhi Municipal Council has placed enhanced cleanliness among its top priorities. An official statement outlined a suite of actions launched on September 4 to keep the city looking presentable.

Around 300 sanitation workers now operate the night shift, supported by ten mechanical road sweepers that clear litter from main arteries. Their goal is to finish most street cleaning and waste removal during the quieter night period.

Morning crews conduct jet‑cleaning and address any remaining tasks, while the evening shift continues upkeep across streets, sidewalks and public venues. In the city’s principal markets, cleaning is performed three times a day – at dawn, dusk and midnight – with constant monitoring of traffic‑heavy routes.

The council has also rolled out fifteen gobbler units for daytime collection of scattered waste, and eleven pressure‑jetting machines for deep‑cleaning of roads and market precincts. Manual cleaning staff numbers have been boosted, especially in densely populated zones where hands‑on work is indispensable.

All supervisory personnel have been instructed to remain on standby 24 × 7, and leave allowances have been limited to ensure rapid response to any waste‑related incidents. The overarching aim is to keep waste disposal swift and maintain a spotless environment throughout the summit period.
