Delhi Hosts 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum on Monday
Parliamentary leaders from across the BRICS group and its partner countries will gather in New Delhi on Monday for the 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum.
The forum will be held in the Central Hall of 'Samvidhan Sadan' inside the Parliament House complex. Its stated goals include strengthening parliamentary cooperation and promoting development that puts people first.
The two-day gathering is set for October 26 and 27. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the event and meet delegation leaders from various countries.
Earlier, on Sunday, Russian State Duma Chairman Vyacheslav Volodin reached India. He held a significant meeting with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.
The two sides agreed that their parliamentary delegations must work harder to enhance cooperation on international platforms. They also stressed the need for joint efforts to counter terrorism.
An official statement quoted Birla as saying, “On behalf of the Parliament of India and 1.4 billion Indians, it is a pleasure to welcome Volodin and his delegation.” He highlighted the special and enduring friendship between the two countries, built on trust, respect and shared aspirations.
Birla commended Russia's steady support for India's battle against terrorism. He said the global community needs to show solidarity and determination to deal with this threat.
The statement further said, “He stressed that the international community should show unity against terrorism and work together for world peace.”
Recalling that India and Russia will complete 80 years of diplomatic relations in 2027, Birla said the 'special and privileged strategic partnership' has grown stronger under Prime Minister Modi and President Vladimir Putin.
At a press conference held at Parliament House on Thursday, Birla described the forum as “a new chapter in India's parliamentary diplomacy.”
He said the programme will include presiding officers and parliamentary leaders of BRICS members and partners, Union ministers, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, presiding officers of state assemblies, legislators and other eminent persons.
On the main theme, Birla said the forum will discuss 'Empowering Parliaments for People-Centric Development'. The focus will be on the role parliamentary institutions can play in advancing development that reflects people's needs and aspirations.
