Debate Highlights Clash Over Police Leadership and Immigrant Safety in L.A.
The Los Angeles mayoral runoff debate on October 15 showcased a sharp divide between candidates Nitya Raman and Karen Bass on public safety and immigration enforcement. Raman called for Police Chief Jim McDonnell’s removal, citing the department’s cooperation with ICE raids that she claims has fostered fear among immigrant neighborhoods.
Bass cautioned that dismissing the chief before the upcoming 2028 Olympics could undermine police stability. She highlighted the rigorous selection process needed for a new chief and argued that the city should not risk its security for political maneuvering.
A separate controversy erupted over a campaign video posted by Raman’s team that featured the phrase “fascist lies.” Raman argued the footage was edited out of context and removed it, while Bass used the incident to question Raman’s readiness to lead the city.
