Deadly Karak Church Attack: India Condemns Terror, Backs Jordan
New Delhi, October 24: India has strongly denounced the shooting at a church in the Jordanian city of Karak, with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar pledging solidarity with Jordan during this sorrowful period.
On Saturday, Jaishankar posted on the social media platform X that India was deeply shaken by the heinous attack on a church in Karak the previous day. Several innocent people were killed and many more were injured, he said. He conveyed deep sympathy to the affected families and prayed for the early recovery of the wounded.
Recalling India's commitment to combating terrorism, the minister wrote that India stands firmly beside the government and friendly people of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in this difficult hour. He stressed that India does not accept terrorism in any form and reaffirmed its strong anti-terror position.
The Ministry of External Affairs also described the attack as a heinous crime in a statement released on Saturday. The ministry said India strongly condemns the assault on a church in Karak, Jordan, on October 23, 2026, which claimed the lives of several innocent people and left many others injured.
In its statement, the ministry expressed sympathy for the victims' families and wished a speedy recovery for those hurt in what it called a cowardly attack. It said India continues to stand firmly with Jordan's government and people and condemns all forms of terrorism.
The attack occurred on Friday during a funeral at the church, when gunmen opened indiscriminate fire. Seven people were killed and 40 others were injured. Jordan's Health Minister Ibrahim Al-Bdour said two of the wounded were in critical condition.
The shooting took place at a Greek Orthodox church in Karak, located about 180 km (110 miles) south of the capital Amman.
Footage shown on Jordanian state television captured two gunmen moving towards the church and firing pistols. A third man, apparently carrying a semi-automatic rifle, then arrived and started shooting before all three ran towards the church.
Jordan has declared three days of national mourning.
