Crew Welfare Concerns Mount as Carrier Stays at Sea Over Eight Months

The USS Abraham Lincoln, a Nimitz‑class aircraft carrier, has been underway for more than 250 days without a single port call, raising red flags about sailor morale and mental health. Naval families and several members of Congress have publicly questioned the sustainability of such a prolonged deployment.

According to multiple briefings, sailors have faced dwindling food stocks, plumbing malfunctions, and limited recreational space. Some reports indicated that a handful of crew members contemplated extreme actions, prompting an internal investigation.

While the Navy asserts that there is no statistical evidence of increased suicides, it acknowledges that the living environment on a carrier at sea for months can be taxing. The Defense Department has warned that some media coverage may have amplified isolated incidents.

Senator Richard Blumenthal recently wrote to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Acting Navy Secretary Sean Stackley, demanding answers on supply shortages, maintenance backlogs, and the psychological support available to the 5,000‑strong crew. The senator also asked for a timeline on when the carrier will be relieved by the USS George Washington.
