Intensifying Crackdown on Awami League Allies Fuels Speculation Over President’s Exit

Dhaka, July 23 – The possibility of President Mohammad Shahabuddin stepping down emerges as the BNP‑led government sharpens actions against politicians linked to the Awami League.

After the president’s May trip to London for medical reasons, he spoke with former prime minister Sheikh Hasina. Intelligence agencies reportedly used the call as a basis to press the president for resignation.

A BNP senior figure emphasized that the phone conversation is not the sole catalyst; the broader political environment adds layers of complexity.

According to a close aide, Shahabuddin could resign by July 31 and move to his Gulshan residence, signalling a significant shift in the country’s power dynamics.

Shahabuddin neither dismissed nor confirmed the resignation rumors during the telephone exchange, opting to keep details private.
