Constitutional Amendments Erode Judicial Independence, FD I H Warns

FDIHS notes that the 26th and 27th constitutional reforms represent a backward step for Pakistan’s legal framework. The changes allow greater political input into the selection of judges and the composition of benches, diminishing the already limited autonomy of the courts.

The study cites interviews with four female legal experts who confirm that the reforms have widened opportunities for patronage and nepotism, further entrenching corruption at every level of the justice system.

The organization calls for urgent reversal of these amendments to restore the checks and balances essential for a democratic judiciary.
