COHNA Leads Dialogue on Hate Crimes, Temple Attacks, and Youth Leadership

On July 1, COHNA coordinated an extensive dialogue with U.S. lawmakers during its Hindu Day of Advocacy at the Capitol. Delegates from 14 states, numbering about 160, met with senators, representatives, and staff from more than 170 congressional offices.

The core of the discussions centered on a spike in anti‑Hindu hate incidents, including recent assaults on Hindu temples and online campaigns that label Hindu Americans as agents of foreign powers. Participants urged policymakers to acknowledge these threats and to consider protective measures.

The event also highlighted India‑U.S. strategic ties. Namgya C. Khampa, head of India’s sub‑mission to the United States, referenced the recent meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump in France, describing it as evidence of shared long‑term goals.

COHNA President Nikunj Trivedi noted that lawmakers from both the Democratic and Republican caucuses attended, offering statements of unity and thanking the community for its willingness to engage directly with Capitol Hill.

A significant component of the day was the focus on cultivating future leaders. Around 40 young Hindu‑American activists participated in a youth summit, and COHNA launched a leadership incubator aimed at training the next generation of advocates, ensuring sustained community representation in American public life.
