Chinese National Park Boosts Tiger and Leopard Numbers

Beijing, July 29 – Data published for Global Tiger Day reveals a notable rebound in the wild Amur tiger and leopard populations within China’s northeastern national park. Tiger figures have risen from 27 individuals in 2017 to 72, and leopard counts have climbed from 42 to 115, more than doubling each species.

The improvement follows a strategic push to build a nature‑conservation system anchored on national parks, implement focused rescue projects for threatened wildlife, and upgrade the country’s wildlife‑monitoring and emergency response networks.

Since the park’s establishment, it has intensified ecological stewardship, research, enforcement, community protection, and trans‑boundary collaboration, recording over 30,000 tiger and 40,000 leopard activity reports.

Cross‑border cooperation with Russia’s Leopard Land National Park now operates on a regular schedule, facilitating joint censuses, patrols, and data sharing to safeguard these flagship predators.
