China Warns US Against Further Pressure on Cuban People

In his speech to the United Nations, Fu Thong warned the United States that escalating economic and political pressure on Cuba would only deepen the humanitarian crisis on the island. He noted that aggressive financial restrictions, export controls on critical energy supplies, and the looming threat of secondary sanctions have already strained the Cuban economy.

According to the Chinese diplomat, the U.S. has also engaged in public naming of Cuban officials and hinted at possible military posturing, actions that breach customary international law.

The ambassador reminded the assembly that the 2023 resolution, passed with a dominant vote of 165 in favor, explicitly calls for an end to the American embargo. This resolution provides a collective endorsement for removing all illegal sanctions.

Fu Thong urged UN member states to reject any attempts by Washington to undermine international legal norms and to protect the development rights of the Cuban people.
