China warns of investment impact after UK seizes British Steel

Beijing warned on July 19 that the United Kingdom’s nationalisation of British Steel could have wider repercussions for Sino‑British investment ties.

The spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry said the move has attracted considerable attention from the Chinese public and investors, who may reconsider future projects in the UK.

Both governments are bound by a bilateral investment protection agreement that obliges each side to safeguard investors’ legal rights and interests. China urged the UK to honour market principles, honour contracts, and reach a compensation solution that satisfies both parties.

The Chinese ministry also affirmed its readiness to support Chinese companies in using legal avenues to defend their rights and indicated that it will keep a close eye on developments, taking necessary steps to protect its national interests if required.
