China vows to lead in SMR development and climate goals

Shan Chengde, director of China’s National Nuclear Energy Administration, emphasized that nuclear power is a critical pillar for building a new energy system and meeting peak‑carbon and net‑zero targets. He outlined China’s comprehensive approach, spanning the full innovation chain, industrial supply chain, and talent pipeline, which places the country at the forefront of SMR research, construction, and deployment. Future plans include expanding technical cooperation, reinforcing safety‑development balance, and fostering joint talent programmes with international partners.
