China’s Unarmed Long‑Range Ballistic Test Sparks International Scrutiny

On July 7, Chinese authorities disclosed that a submarine had fired an unarmed intercontinental ballistic missile toward the Pacific Ocean.

The missile, carrying a dummy payload, travelled across the ocean and landed within a pre‑arranged zone after China had warned neighbouring states in advance.

U.S. State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said the test raises “grave concern” because it signals a swift acceleration of Beijing’s nuclear arsenal, undermining worldwide efforts to curb nuclear spread.

Pigott called on China to join formal arms‑control talks and to sign up for a regular notification system covering all ICBM and space launch activities, mirroring the commitments of the other P5 nations.

Washington also reaffirmed its steadfast security commitments to partners across the Indo‑Pacific, declaring that its defence obligations remain unchanged.

The launch prompted varied reactions: New Zealand deemed it neither positive nor negative, Australia called the act destabilising, and Japan expressed deep concern over the expanding scope of Chinese military operations.
