China’s Submarine Missile Test Raises Global Alarm Amid US‑Iran Tensions

A Chinese submarine recently fired a missile capable of delivering a nuclear warhead, a move that has sparked apprehension among defense circles worldwide. The test occurred while the United States was intensely focused on its escalating confrontation with Iran, which has dominated Washington’s attention since the end of February.

The Asia Media Center highlighted that the launch deserved a level of scrutiny comparable to the major engagements in the Gulf. However, the United States’ resources have been almost entirely allocated to retaliatory strikes against Iranian positions following the attacks on merchant vessels in the Hormuz Strait.

The incident reverberates in the Pacific, where any nuclear‑capable missile activity is closely watched by neighboring states, including New Zealand, which views the South Pacific as a nuclear‑free zone.

This event follows a pattern of high‑visibility Chinese missile tests, notably an intercontinental ballistic missile launch over the Pacific in September 2024 and a silo‑based ICBM test in December 2024. Collectively, these actions illustrate China’s transition from a limited, concealed nuclear arsenal toward an openly expanding and modernising force.
