Rapid Growth in Renewable Energy Pushes China Past 400 GW Milestone
China’s installed electricity generation capacity crossed the 400‑gigawatt mark for the first time, reaching 401 GW by the end of May, according to the State Energy Administration. The 11 percent year‑on‑year increase is driven primarily by unprecedented growth in solar and wind power.
Since 2010, China has recorded an average annual capacity increase of 9.7 percent, dwarfing the United States (1.7 percent), the European Union (3.2 percent), India (7.1 percent), Japan (2.9 percent) and Russia (1.2 percent). The renewable surge has compressed the timeline needed to add 100 GW of capacity from a decade to just two years.
Deputy director Chang Tepin of the China Electricity Council’s Statistics and Digital Intelligence Division explained that this rapid scale‑up lays a solid foundation for economic growth while enhancing energy security. Even though China consumes the most electricity globally, the expanding supply remains sufficient and reliable.
The milestone underscores the effectiveness of policy incentives, large‑scale financing, and technological advancements that have propelled China’s clean‑energy sector to the forefront of the world’s power landscape.
