At the UN Human Rights Council’s extraordinary session focused on Iran, held Friday in Geneva, China’s envoy Zha Peiyang delivered a robust defense of sovereignty. Triggered by requests from nations like Iceland, the meeting addressed mounting worries about human rights in the Islamic Republic amid ongoing domestic turbulence.
‘Each country has the right to independently select its human rights development path,’ Zha stated, outlining China’s opposition to interference disguised as human rights advocacy. Beijing condemns unilateral impositions of human rights regimes without the target nation’s agreement and the hypocrisy of double standards in such matters.
Zha stressed that Iran’s affairs remain squarely within its domestic jurisdiction, answerable only to its own populace. Upholding the UN Charter and international law, China opposes force or coercion in diplomacy, calling instead for respect of Iran’s sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity.
The international community, Zha argued, should extend support to Iran’s leadership and citizens in navigating hardships, preserving national stability, and protecting rights—always on the condition of mutual respect. Beijing advocates dialogue to bridge divides and stands ready to facilitate constructive engagement. As Iran’s situation captivates global observers, China’s intervention highlights its commitment to equitable international norms.
