China Rejects 2016 Hague Ruling as ‘Useless Paper’, Warns of Foreign Interference

The Chinese foreign ministry reiterated its refusal to accept the 2016 Hague arbitration award, labeling the decision a "piece of useless paper" that lacks any legal foundation. Beijing accused foreign governments of exploiting the ruling to justify interference in the South China Sea and to stir unrest among regional actors.

Spokespersons pointed out that China has consistently maintained its historic rights over the majority of the sea, a claim supported by archival maps and decades‑long administration. They added that the tribunal's verdict contradicts historical facts and international practice, and therefore cannot bind China.

China further warned that any attempts by external powers to impose the ruling could lead to heightened tensions and destabilisation, urging all parties to respect sovereign rights and avoid provocative actions.
