A powerful gas explosion ripped through a coal mine in northern China’s Shanxi province on May 22, triggering swift intervention from the country’s top leadership. President Xi Jinping personally directed rescue and investigation efforts, underscoring the government’s commitment to worker safety. In his instructions, Xi emphasized that medical teams must do everything possible to treat the wounded while rescue operations proceed in a scientific and orderly manner. He ordered investigators to determine the root cause of the blast and ensure that anyone found negligent faces legal consequences. The president further urged local governments and relevant agencies to learn from the incident by carrying out thorough safety inspections across high-risk industries. He also highlighted the importance of flood control measures during the current rainy season to protect communities from additional threats. Premier Li Qiang reinforced these directives by calling for rapid location of missing miners, immediate care for survivors, and clear communication with the public about developments at the site.
