Residents across northern Chile felt the ground shake violently Tuesday when a 6.7 magnitude earthquake hit the region, yet remarkably no deaths or serious injuries have been confirmed. The temblor originated 85 kilometers beneath the surface near Calama, a key mining hub in the Antofagasta region. Seismologists pinpointed the epicenter about 296 kilometers south-southeast of Iquique. Because the quake struck deep underground, surface vibrations remained moderate, sparing buildings and infrastructure from catastrophic harm. Chile’s world-renowned earthquake-resistant construction practices, upgraded after devastating quakes in 2010 and 2014, once again proved their worth. Local officials responded swiftly by suspending mining activities and closing schools for safety checks. Although some areas experienced brief power cuts and minor landslides on rural roads, emergency services quickly restored order. No tsunami alert was declared, and geologists continue to track smaller aftershocks. The incident highlights how Chile’s proactive disaster management and strict building regulations minimize human and economic losses even when strong seismic events occur.
