Ceuta Border Remains Tense After Massive July Influx, Morocco Steps In

The border area surrounding the Spanish enclave of Ceuta stayed on high alert on Saturday after Moroccan forces intervened to stop a group of sub‑Saharan migrants from advancing. The migrants, who had been moving toward the frontier, were detained about three kilometres away in the Castilejos outskirts, where a dense police cordon had been established.

Reports indicate that the push toward the border began at six in the morning. Moroccan security units were quickly reinforced, and Spanish police worked to push the crowd back, encircling them in a secure zone. The operation involved a large‑scale security deployment, surpassing the level of forces present during the late‑July surge that saw roughly 80,000 migrants enter Ceuta over two days.

Unlike the chaotic scenes of the July 30‑31 period, the current incident did not involve massive groups gathering near the border. Both sides have increased their security presence, and the nearby Melilla crossing has remained calm, with no major incidents reported.

Ceuta still faces the challenge of integrating about 5,000 undocumented migrants who lack proper papers. The heightened border monitoring is expected to continue as local authorities strive to manage the ongoing humanitarian and administrative pressures.
