Catalonia Fires Near Costa Brava Tamed but Heat Threat Persists

In Spain’s Catalonia region, a major fire that erupted near the Costa Brava on Friday scorched more than 2,200 hectares, most of it within the protected natural area of Gaveres. By Sunday morning the blaze was largely under control, thanks to intensive firefighting efforts.

Nevertheless, the national fire service cautioned that the ongoing heatwave could reignite hotspots, as lingering smoke and high temperatures keep the environment vulnerable. The agency stressed that monitoring will continue across the affected landscape, especially in patches where vegetation has survived and could fuel future flare‑ups.
