Casualties Rise to 68 After Recent East Nusa Tenggara Quake

The death toll from the 7.7‑magnitude earthquake that struck East Nusa Tenggara on 15 August has climbed to 68, according to the BNPB. The fatalities are distributed across several regencies: 26 in Moa Mangarai, 24 in East Mangarai, eight in Nagekeo, four in Sikka, and two each in Ende, West Mangarai and Ngada.

In addition to the loss of life, more than 200 people were injured, and extensive damage was recorded to residential and public infrastructure. The quake also triggered a wave of aftershocks, further complicating rescue and recovery operations.

The provincial government declared a 14‑day emergency response period following the disaster, mobilising relief supplies, restoring power and telecommunications, and coordinating with the Indonesian armed forces to reach remote and inaccessible communities.
