Carney Reports Constructive Trade Discussion With Donald Trump

New Delhi, November 1: Canada and the United States appear to be edging toward a more cooperative footing. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Sunday reported a good discussion with US President Donald Trump about the future of trade between the two North American neighbours.

Carney posted about the conversation on X. He said the exchange built on recent positive talks, which had focused on the broad contours of a trade agreement that would serve both countries well.

He argued that such a deal would generate new jobs for Canadian workers and bring greater affordability to households. He also underlined that any agreement must respect Canada's languages, culture and sovereignty in full.

The prime minister said Canadian and American teams would work together over the coming weeks to reach the goal. His message points to a phase of active coordination between the two governments.

Carney had earlier announced on Friday that Canada and the European Union were pursuing their closest partnership short of full membership. He said Canada could become the first associate member of the EU, a step that both sides were working to advance.

According to the announcement, associate membership would fall one step short of full membership. It would nonetheless allow Canada to take part in extensive economic, trade, technology and defence cooperation with the EU.

The back-to-back announcements underline Canada's broader strategy of widening its trade and strategic ties at a time of shifting global economic dynamics.
