How Captain Smita Machhar’s Quick Action Prevented a Potential Crash
Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended FlyDubai captain Smita Machhar for her swift response that averted a possible crash on a flight heading to Israel. The aircraft was hijacked mid‑air when a co‑pilot attempted to stab the captain and bring the plane down.
Despite a severe wound on her body, Captain Machhar fought back, opened the cockpit door, and helped crew members restrain the attacker. The plane subsequently landed safely at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia, with all passengers and crew surviving the ordeal.
Modi stressed that the captain’s decisive measures saved not only the lives of the 174 passengers but also upheld the dignity of Indian pilots worldwide. He said the incident demonstrates that India’s strength lies in protecting lives, not taking them, and that the captain’s actions have raised the esteem of over 140 crore citizens.
The prime minister also highlighted the captain’s spiritual fortitude, noting she recited the Hanuman Chalisa during the crisis, believing divine intervention guided her. He concluded by expressing heartfelt pride in her heroism and the values it represents for the nation.
