Captain Machhar’s brave cockpit response cited for national recognition
In a formal representation addressed to the Prime Minister’s Office, the Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) has asked that Captain Smith Machhar receive the highest national honour for his conduct on Flight DZ1073. The incident, which unfolded on 30 September, involved a sudden and dangerous confrontation in the cockpit that left the first‑officer seriously injured.
Despite his own injuries, Captain Machhar continued to fulfil his duties as pilot‑in‑command, stabilising the aircraft and diverting it to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where an emergency landing was performed. The plane was carrying 182 occupants, and the captain’s actions were crucial in ensuring that all passengers and crew were safely evacuated.
FIP described the captain’s conduct as a blend of “extraordinary courage, patience, situational awareness and leadership”. The union called on the government to verify the incident’s details and to consider a national gallantry award for the pilot, citing his self‑less commitment to the safety of the public.
The representation was also copied to the Civil Aviation Secretary and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. The appeal follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s public commendation of Captain Machhar’s bravery, which saved hundreds of lives.
