Canada Proposes ‘Security Island’ Role for India Ahead of BRICS Summit

New Delhi, September 11 – While India prepares to host the 2026 BRICS summit, Canada has announced plans to support New Delhi as a strategic “security island.” High Commissioner Christopher Kuter told reporters that Canada aims to supply critical minerals essential for India’s green transition, semiconductor production and other industrial needs.

Kuter stressed that Canada possesses the resources, technology and expertise to become a trusted supplier. He added that the partnership comes at a time when global trade and political frameworks face heightened uncertainty, and a secure supply chain is vital for both nations.

Rohit Dev, speaking about the broader BRICS agenda, reiterated the importance of resilience and innovation. He highlighted that India’s defence collaborations, including dual‑use technologies and upcoming engine projects, are proceeding unhindered by sanctions, reinforcing the country’s self‑reliance.
