Downstream Energy Ties Seen as Next Frontier for India‑Brunei

New Delhi – High Commissioner Janie underscored that beyond the existing trade of roughly $500 million, the most promising area for India‑Brunei collaboration lies in downstream energy.

Current bilateral commerce, which has risen to more than $500 million, continues to expand year after year, according to the commissioner.

Brunei’s steady export of crude oil and liquefied natural gas to India forms the backbone of the energy relationship, while Indian investors have taken stakes in Brunei’s upstream hydrocarbon sector.

The commissioner highlighted that joint efforts in refining, petrochemical production, and power generation could unlock new value chains, deepening the strategic partnership.

Both countries are natural allies within the context of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), where they seek to coordinate policies and projects at bilateral and regional levels.

Diplomatic relations were inaugurated on 10 May 1984. The 2024 celebration of 40 years of ties, marked by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s historic trip to Brunei, saw the relationship upgraded to an “enhanced partnership.”

A defence pact signed in 2016 and regular Indian Navy visits underline the security dimension of the partnership.

Space sector cooperation is also in place; ISRO has established a telemetry, tracking and command (TT&C) ground station in Brunei to support satellite missions.

The Indian community in Brunei numbers about 14,000, including doctors, teachers and various professionals who contribute to the host nation’s development.

Janie concluded that focusing on downstream energy projects will not only boost trade beyond the $500 million benchmark but also solidify a long‑standing, multi‑sector partnership.
