Heatwave hits Britain: record days above 30°C and rising wildfire risk

London, 12 August – Britain is in the grip of a severe heatwave that has already broken several temperature records for 2026. The Met Office issued an extreme heat warning, predicting that temperatures could soar to 38°C across southern and eastern England as well as parts of the Midlands.

The country has logged 35 days with temperatures reaching 30°C or higher, a figure unmatched in recent years. In response, amber heat‑health alerts have been activated, advising the public—especially older adults and vulnerable groups—to take preventive steps against heat‑related illnesses.

Alongside the heat, an ongoing drought has amplified the risk of wildfires. So far this year, 966 forest fires have been reported in England and Wales, with 185 incidents recorded in the first ten days of August alone.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham called an emergency COBRA meeting to coordinate a national response. The agenda includes bolstering fire‑fighting resources, managing water scarcity, and supporting emergency services. The government pledged an additional £9.7 million to upgrade firefighting capabilities.

Approximately 45 million people reside in areas classified as drought‑impacted, and about 27 million are already under water‑use restrictions. The agricultural sector is facing heightened challenges as water tables drop and irrigation becomes limited.

Officials emphasize the need for immediate action to protect public health and safety, while also developing long‑term strategies to improve water resilience and adapt to a changing climate.
