In a pivotal kickoff to its BRICS chairmanship, India convened the first Sherpas and Sous-Sherpas conclave in New Delhi from February 9-10, 2026. This two-day huddle mapped out the roadmap for high-level engagements, spotlighting collaborative pathways for the Global South.
Leading the proceedings were Sudhakar Dalela, India’s BRICS Sherpa and Economic Relations Secretary, alongside Shambhu L. Hakki, the Sous-Sherpa. Participants included top envoys from an expanded BRICS fold: Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and UAE.
Echoing PM Modi’s ethos of human-centric development, the agenda covered institutional strengthening and sector-specific initiatives in health, agriculture, labor, environment, energy, innovation, digital tech, security, and finance. EAM S. Jaishankar unveiled the BRICS 2026 branding, themed around resilience, innovation, and sustainable cooperation.
Vibrant presentations highlighted youth connect programs, sports partnerships, cultural dialogues, and key platforms like the BRICS Business Council and Women’s Alliance. Beyond policy talks, cultural immersion visits to Akshardham Temple and handicraft hubs underscored soft power diplomacy.
These Sherpas, serving as vital conduits for heads of state much like Himalayan guides, will meet periodically to align on thematic priorities. With India’s presidency underway since January 13, 2026, expect amplified focus on equitable global governance and emerging market synergies.
