Boosting Economic Cooperation Seen as Key for Global South Resilience

At a special UN session, India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar outlined a roadmap for strengthening economic collaboration among Global South countries. He argued that collective investment in critical sectors—agriculture, fertilizers, and maritime logistics—can mitigate the ripple effects of global disruptions.

The minister emphasized that the South must become an integral part of decision‑making bodies that shape policies on trade, finance and climate. He called for reforms that give these nations a voice in discussions that directly influence their economies.

Jaishankar warned against creating artificial choke points in supply chains, finance or connectivity, insisting that international law should guarantee safe commercial shipping and protect seafarers. He urged rapid action to resolve food‑security challenges, especially the availability of grains and fertilizers.

A key point of his address was the promotion of technology that serves people first. He urged the sharing of AI tools and digital platforms developed within the Global South to foster inclusive growth, while also encouraging partnerships that lessen dependence on the Global North.
