From Bonn to New Delhi: Diplomat Philip Ekrmann’s career and impact on India‑Germany cooperation

Philip Ekrmann, who departed New Delhi this week after a distinguished tenure as Germany’s ambassador, traces his roots to academic study in Bonn, Heidelberg and Utrecht, where he earned doctorates in art history and economics. Joining the German foreign service in 1993, his diplomatic journey has taken him across continents.

Early assignments placed him in Rabat, Morocco, and later at Germany’s permanent mission to the United Nations in New York. In 2006‑07 he commanded the German provincial reconstruction team in Kunduz, Afghanistan, gaining crucial experience in post‑conflict reconstruction.

From 2007‑2010 he served as political adviser at the German embassy in New Delhi, overseeing political analysis and fostering bilateral dialogue. He later worked in Berlin supporting former foreign ministers Joschka Fischer and Frank‑Walter Steinmeier, and headed the Afghanistan‑Pakistan task force at the German Foreign Ministry between 2010‑2014.

His subsequent postings included deputy head of mission in Washington (2014‑2016) and a senior director‑general role covering Africa, Latin America and the Near‑East. Throughout his career, Ekrmann has consistently emphasized the importance of renewable energy cooperation and the need for diversified energy sources, themes he reiterated in a recent interview with a news agency before leaving India.
