BIMSTEC Aligns with India’s Strategic Priorities, Says National Security Adviser

New Delhi, July 16 – Ajit Doval, India’s National Security Adviser, addressed the fifth meeting of BIMSTEC national security chiefs, calling it a landmark moment for the country. He explained that the forum encapsulates India’s "Neighbourhood First" stance, its "Act East" ambition, and the broader "Ocean" vision.

Doval warned that the world is currently navigating through conflicts and geopolitical volatility, while swift technological progress is creating multi‑layered security risks. Supply‑chain disruptions have added economic pressure on all BIMSTEC nations, making deeper cooperation essential.

He pointed out that BIMSTEC brings together the most dynamic regions of the Indian Ocean, representing a combined population of about 1.7 billion—roughly 22 percent of global humanity—and an aggregate economy close to $5 trillion.

The Bay of Bengal, Doval noted, is more than a geographic feature; it symbolizes a shared civilizational and cultural legacy that binds the member states. Building on these age‑old connections, BIMSTEC has forged strong partnerships across various sectors, with the aim of delivering shared prosperity and resilience.

The adviser highlighted the progress made in joint efforts to combat terrorism, transnational organized crime, cyber threats and maritime insecurity. He affirmed that BIMSTEC nations are prepared to tackle emerging challenges collectively.

Concluding his remarks, Doval reiterated that BIMSTEC’s long‑term goals—regional security, enhanced connectivity, capacity development and economic stability—will continue to guide the collective endeavors of the bloc.
