Bill Requires Report on China’s Commercial Space Capabilities

A central provision of the Space Superiority Readiness Act 2026 mandates that the executive branch submit a comprehensive public report to Congress on China’s commercial space activities and their possible military uses. The report must be delivered within 180 days after the legislation becomes law.

The requirement stems from warnings issued by the U.S.–China Economic and Security Review Commission, which noted Beijing’s accelerating development of both offensive and defensive space assets. By shedding light on these capabilities, lawmakers aim to close intelligence gaps and shape responsive policy measures.

Senator Britt stressed that understanding China’s investment in launch services, satellite constellations and dual‑use technologies is essential for safeguarding the United States’ own space operations.

The legislation also calls for regular briefings to monitor progress, ensuring that the United States can adjust its own force structure, acquisition strategies and training curricula to counteract emerging challenges.

If enacted, the reporting provision will provide a transparent, data‑driven foundation for future decisions on space security and defense budgeting.
