Bhutan Completes 108 Stupa Project, Dedicating to PM Modi

India and Bhutan have further strengthened their civilizational ties through a unique spiritual tribute to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In a historic feat of construction, 108 Buddhist stupas were built in just nine hours at a site in southern Bhutan.

The 76th stupa in the series was specifically reserved for the Indian Prime Minister. The dedication ceremony was graced by Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Indian Cabinet Minister Kiren Rijiju, who unveiled the commemorative plaque.

According to official statements shared on social media, the project highlights the seamless collaboration and mutual respect between the two governments. The rapid execution of the 108-stupa construction was hailed as a testament to shared values and administrative efficiency.

Religiously, the Jangchub Chortens are deeply meaningful. They stand as emblems of wisdom and spiritual growth within the Buddhist faith. The completion of the full circle of 108 structures is viewed as a major merit-making endeavor.

The location, Gelephu Mindfulness City, is an emerging special administrative zone close to the Indian frontier. It forms part of a broader visionary development plan led by the Bhutanese King to promote mindfulness and sustainable urban planning.

Cultural and religious exchanges remain a cornerstone of India-Bhutan relations. Bhutanese Buddhists regularly visit Indian holy places, including Bodh Gaya, Sarnath, and Nalanda, reinforcing the ancient shared heritage that continues to unite both nations today.
