Baqen earthquake: 60 prefab homes built at high-altitude camp

A relief camp set up for earthquake survivors in Maru township of Baqen county, Nagchu city, has been equipped with 60 prefabricated housing units to shelter displaced residents in the high-altitude region of Xizang (Tibet) Autonomous Region.

The camp, located more than 4,400 meters above sea level, is in village No. 2 of Maru township, which was among the areas hardest hit by the 7.0-magnitude earthquake that struck on the night of October 22.

Official data shows that by 5 pm on October 24, 16 people had died and 76 had been injured, including 11 with serious injuries and 65 with minor injuries. A total of 12,489 people had been moved to safe locations by that time.

During a visit to the camp on October 25, the housing units were seen to have improved thermal insulation to protect residents from the cold. Families started moving into the homes that same evening.

Alongside shelter, power restoration has been a priority. State Grid reported that electricity was fully restored in the affected area by 8:38 pm on October 24, supported by emergency teams, generator vehicles and equipment deployed in the region. Authorities are now focusing on providing warm accommodation and heating support to people in the area.
