Bangladesh Prime Minister Invited to 18th BRICS Summit as Bimstec Chair
Prime Minister Tariq Rahman received a formal invitation to attend the 18th BRICS Summit scheduled for September 12‑13 in New Delhi. The invitation was extended in his capacity as the current chair of Bimstec – the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi‑Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation. Bimstec, a seven‑nation platform, links South Asian members Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal and Sri Lanka with Southeast Asian partners Myanmar and Thailand. The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted the summit’s role as a bridge between South and Southeast Asia, offering a strategic venue for regional dialogue. The invitation, sent after Rahman assumed office in February 2026, underscores India’s intent to involve Bangladesh more closely in multilateral forums.
