Bangladesh’s Measles Crisis Deepens: 1,002 Deaths Reported Amid Vaccination Gaps

Dhaka, September 9 – The ongoing measles outbreak in Bangladesh has escalated, with three additional child fatalities recorded on Wednesday, pushing the death total to 1,002 for the current year. According to the Directorate General of Health Services, the three deaths were logged as suspected measles cases within the last 24 hours. Official figures show 100 confirmed measles deaths and 902 suspected ones. The country reported 1,119 new suspected infections in the past day, bringing the overall suspected count to 167,580, while 69 new laboratory‑confirmed cases raised the total confirmed infections to 19,904. Health experts point to insufficient vaccination coverage and lack of effective preventive strategies, particularly for infants younger than six months who are not yet eligible for the measles vaccine, as key drivers of the outbreak. The government has announced plans to purchase additional vaccine doses and is considering a fast‑track campaign to reach children who have missed routine immunisation. The chair of the national verification committee called for a specialised panel to audit surveillance data, identify areas with low coverage and implement targeted supplementary immunisation activities, coupled with stricter public health enforcement to halt further spread.
