Industrial Shutdowns and Job Losses Hit Women Workers in Bangladesh

Women workers are bearing the heaviest toll of Bangladesh’s industrial downturn. The Awami League reports that the BakshiMko group alone laid off close to 40,000 employees, while the leather sector lost 80 factories and the ceramics industry saw more than 100 units become inactive.

Because roughly nine out of ten garment workers are women, the gender share of total job losses is estimated at 90 percent. The loss of income is straining household budgets and threatening the economic security of countless families that rely on female earnings.

The party warns that the lack of a robust safety net for displaced women could trigger longer‑term social instability unless swift policy measures are introduced.
