Bangladesh’s Future Should Rest With Its People, Emphasises Hasina

At a high‑profile seminar in Geneva, Sheikh Hasina highlighted a cascade of incidents across Bangladesh, including alleged violence, killings, arrests and a pervasive sense of insecurity that many claim never reach the media. She warned that the crisis has moved beyond mere political instability to a broader breakdown of law, order and governmental responsibility.

Hasina pointed to pressure on universities and other educational institutions, noting instances where student admissions were cancelled, certificates withheld and young professionals suspended because of their perceived political affiliations. She insisted that a person’s political identity should never be treated as collective guilt, and that due process must be followed for any individual accused of wrongdoing.

The former prime minister concluded by urging the restoration of judicial independence, equitable legal treatment, and the guarantee of fundamental freedoms such as freedom of expression, the right to form organisations and peaceful political activity. She called on international partners to keep a close eye on Bangladesh’s constitutional health.
