Bangladesh Records 758 Measles Deaths; Experts Warn Dengue Could Exacerbate Crisis

Dhaka, July 12 – Official figures released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) show a total of 758 deaths linked to measles, following five more child fatalities reported in the previous 24‑hour period. Suspected measles deaths have risen to 664, while lab‑confirmed deaths are steady at 94.

The agency also announced 879 new suspected measles cases, bringing the cumulative suspected total to 111,480. Laboratory confirmation added another 90 cases, pushing the verified count to 13,500.

Since March 15, 94,340 suspected measles patients have been admitted to hospitals, with 90,605 reported as recovered. Current daily admissions exceed 900, placing considerable strain on medical facilities that are already coping with a high dengue caseload.

June data reveal that 48% of this year’s dengue cases and 72% of dengue‑related deaths occurred during that month. As the monsoon reaches its apex in July and August, experts fear that failure to implement aggressive larval control could lead to a sharp rise in both measles and dengue infections.

Associate Professor Fazle Rabbani Chowdhury of Bangladesh Medical University noted a tentative decline in measles incidence, but described the downward trend as slower than expected. He warned that the monsoon‑driven surge in mosquito populations has already sparked an increase in dengue, adding further pressure on already limited health resources.

The medical community is urging the government to step up mosquito‑larvae eradication campaigns, expand temporary treatment centres, and establish dedicated dengue units to manage the dual outbreak without compromising the standard of care.
