Bangkok Shooting Leaves Two Injured as Former MP Targets Police Official

Bangkok, August 10 (IANS) – A 71‑year‑old former member of Thailand’s parliament carried out a shooting at the Provincial Administration Organization office in Nonthaburi on Monday morning. The assailant, identified as ex‑MP Chalong Rewirang, forced his way inside the building and opened fire on PAO chief Thongchai Yenprasert, a former police officer now heading the local administration.

The attack resulted in the death of the chief after he was rushed to Frarangklaw Hospital following on‑scene cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Two additional victims, including the chief’s driver, sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Police Major General Decharapi Kongdi confirmed that the suspect had a political background, having served three terms in the national assembly and recently joining the Future Forward Party. The motive behind the violent act remains unclear, prompting a full‑scale police inquiry.

Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage, eyewitness accounts, and the suspect’s recent political activities to piece together why the former legislator chose such a drastic course of action.
