Baloch Nationalists Reject Section 144, Plan 79th Freedom Day Amid Internet Shutdown

Quetta, August 8 – Baloch activist Mir Yaar Baloch warned that the Pakistani military is employing every possible tactic to hamper the province’s Independence Day celebrations slated for August 11. He affirmed that Baloch leaders will not bow to the Section 144 prohibition that bans public assemblies throughout the region.

The event will mark the 79th anniversary of the 1947 declaration of independence by the former Kalat princely state, a historic moment that Baloch nationalists re‑enact each year as a reminder of their claim to sovereignty.

Mir alleged that the army has imposed sweeping restrictions, including a comprehensive internet blackout from August 7 to August 30, with the explicit aim of stifling communication and coordination among Baloch activists during the national holiday.

In his statements posted on a popular social network, he rejected accusations that label Baloch fighters as terrorists. “Our freedom fighters are part of Balochistan’s defence and security forces, trusted by sixty million Baloch who see them as fellow sons and daughters of the same soil, serving national interests,” he wrote.

He emphasized that these groups are not driven by financial gain or a desire to spread unrest. Their mission, according to the activist, is to protect peace, safeguard citizens, and lay the groundwork for a stable, prosperous Balochistan.

Mir also claimed that the armed Baloch units are targeting what they describe as “Pakistani terrorist networks” that they hold responsible for creating instability, insecurity, and violence in the region. He appealed to the international community to respect the Baloch people’s aspirations and recognize them as the rightful custodians of their land, determined to free it from foreign control.
