Australia’s Immigration Debate Heats Up After Sydney Protest

A sizeable anti‑immigration gathering took place in Sydney’s Belmore Park on 30 August, with more than 300 individuals rallying under the “March for Australia” banner. Law‑enforcement agencies deployed over 70 officers, including mounted police and riot‑control teams, to monitor the event and prevent any escalation. A separate counter‑demonstration was held in Hyde Park, underscoring the contentious nature of the issue.

The rally was spearheaded by Bryan Marlo, founder of the nationalist group Revive Australia. Marlo highlighted that the movement, launched in August 2025, has energized public sentiment around migration and national identity, and has directly aided the right‑leaning One Nation party, which has been gaining ground in recent by‑elections, such as a secret election win in Western Australia.

Although several attendees wore One Nation apparel, the protest’s social‑media channels have also aired criticisms of the party’s policy stance, revealing an internal tension.

A central point of contention was the volume of net migration. While One Nation has signalled a target of 130,000 new arrivals per year, many protestors demanded a far stricter limit, chanting slogans like “remigration” and calling for an end to large‑scale immigration.

The discussion has expanded from pure economic considerations to encompass employment, housing, demographic growth, public‑service strain and notions of national identity. Analysts see the surge in One Nation’s support as an attempt by the party to harness growing public frustration and turn it into political capital.
