Indian Archaeological Survey Takes Lead in Restoring 9th‑Century Prambanan

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has been tasked with the conservation and restoration of Indonesia’s Prambanan temple complex, the country’s most extensive Hindu site. The project, launched on July 8, aims to stabilize the towering spires, repair weather‑worn stonework, and digitize the complex for future research.

Prambanan, a UNESCO World Heritage property, represents a shared archaeological legacy between India and Indonesia. The restoration effort follows a successful documentation of the Borobudur precinct, another iconic Indonesian monument, by ASI teams.

Both governments view the initiative as a continuation of a long‑standing partnership in heritage preservation across Southeast Asia, reflecting India’s commitment to protecting ancient cultural landscapes beyond its borders.
