APEC Ministers Discuss Climate Impact on Regional Food Supplies

Beijing, 25 August – Climate variability and erratic supply‑chain dynamics were top of the agenda at the 11th APEC Food Security Ministers’ Meeting in Hangzhou. More than 200 officials from the 21 APEC members, the Secretariat and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization gathered to exchange policy insights.

The participants agreed that the intertwined nature of climate change and logistics disruptions poses a serious threat to the Asia‑Pacific’s food security. While each economy faces distinct agricultural conditions, their interests converge on ensuring stable, affordable food access. The ministers highlighted the potential of leveraging each other’s strengths to build a more resilient regional food system.

China, emphasizing its strategic role, reported annual food production now exceeding 7 billion kilograms, with forecasts projecting 7.15 billion kilograms of grain by 2025 and per‑capita availability above 500 kilograms. The Chinese delegation pledged to cooperate closely with fellow economies, translating commitments into practical steps for regional and global food security.
