American Embassy Deploys Extra Consular Staff to Aid Flood Victims in Nepal

In response to the devastating floods that swept through the Nepal‑China border area, the U.S. Embassy in Kathmandu has reinforced its consular team with additional officers. The move aims to improve outreach to American tourists and trekkers who may be trapped in the hard‑to‑reach terrain.

The embassy’s expanded staff will operate a 24‑hour help line, process emergency travel documents, and coordinate with Nepalese disaster agencies to locate missing citizens. A spokesperson confirmed that five U.S. travelers have already been safely evacuated, while the whereabouts of approximately 90 others remain unknown.

No fatalities among the U.S. nationals have been reported so far. The State Department continues to monitor the situation closely, offering logistical support and deploying disaster‑response experts to the affected zones.

Washington also announced a $500,000 humanitarian grant, which will be administered by Catholic Relief Services to provide shelter, food, clean water, sanitation and health services to those displaced by the floods.

The embassy urged Americans in the region to stay in contact, follow local directives, and register with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program for timely alerts.
